She holds a BA in Visual Communication from the Beijing University of Technology and an MA in Information Experience Design from the Royal College of Art.&nbsp; Deeply engaging with the topics of post-humanism, Yao wish to tell the story of the marginalized citizens: the nocturnal urban wildlife, the disciplined trees, the artificial forest, and the speechless land. Her works aim to use moving images as a medium to provocatively examine how the public consumes, exploits, and ridicules these creatures, reducing them to a source of entertainment. By using speculative narrative, Yao’s works question the privilege that we claim as human beings, and the ethics of what we are doing to these, our fellow non-humans. Her artist’s films have been screened and exhibited across UK, Germany, China and Metaverse. Including London Short FIlm Festival, Clapham International Film Festival, Alpha Film Festival, and HiShorts! Film Festival. And she has exhibited with University of Heidelberg, Safehouse2, Ircam Paris, ArtSect Gallery, Stanley Arts, IKLECTIK, and Royal College of Art. Yao has contributed to discussions on art and ecology through workshops such as Deep Ecology and the Sublime (2021), reflecting her commitment to exploring the intersections of environmental consciousness and artistic practice. While this project seeks to protect key ecological areas and improve air quality, it has sparked deep tensions between the government and local residents. Businesses have been shuttered, homes razed, and even the deceased have not escaped disruption, with graves unearthed and relocated to make way for new forests. Land Speech seeks to amplify the often-overlooked perspective of the land itself, a resource that has been fought over for millennia. From the construction of homes and businesses to the cultivation of crops and the final resting places for the deceased, land has been fundamental to human development. Yet, in the relentless struggle for ownership and use, the land's voice remains unheard—its exhaustion, its degradation, and its quiet resilience. In this interactive sound project, three local residents of Houying Zhen, Changping, who recently moved into the area, collaborate in a workshop to give the land a voice. Using tools such as stones and shovels to represent construction, hoes and rakes for agricultural activities, and tree branches and spades for reforestation, the participants engage with the land, each action symbolizing humanity’s imprint. They are also given emotion-laden words to express the land's buried feelings, allowing the earth to communicate its untold story. Land Speech is a 4-minute moving image that documents this workshop, a poignant exploration of the silent, often disregarded, cries of the land as it endures human interference and alteration. This project invites viewers to reflect on the long history of land use in Houying Zhen, Changping, and to consider the broader implications of environmental policies that, while well-intentioned, may overlook the nuanced relationship between humans and the land. As governments and communities worldwide grapple with the challenge of environmental preservation, this work challenges us to listen to the land and consider its needs alongside our own. The urban wild animals who share the same heterogeneous city as us have been described as dangerous, filthy, disgusting, evil, and representing a bad omen by the mass media. MYSTERIOUS CREATURE SIGHTED IN CENTRAL LONDON is an experimental film which tells the news of a “mysterious creature” that had been seen and described as a potential threat to human beings. Different characters from the news report try to use this “mysterious creature” to inject horror into the public and profit from it. At this time, the "mysterious creature" has become a gimmick and no one is interested in establishing the truth. By capturing abstract visuals to tell this absurd news-story, the film aims to re-examine how the current publicity surrounding urban wildlife in the mass media provokes anxiety, and exacerbates the alienation people can feel towards the animals that share their city space, giving an entirely distorted view of these creatures' natures, distorts the truth and spreads distrust and fear. &nbsp;I wish to use this to help the audience re-examine the relationship between people and urban wildlife, and create a better understanding of the reality. GouMang / 阿多尼斯与句芒 8 mins, 2021 A new insight into non-human consciousness --- using plants as a guide. Adonis &amp; GouMang /阿多尼斯与句芒 is an art project inspired by myths and legends, treating AR as a narrative tool in speculative film, embedded performance art with city walking. The project aims to create a dialogue between different topiary cultures. Wenqing Yao and Yi Zhu (Icey), as co-directors, are both concerned with ecological issues. This time they focused on the pruned plants in the city. Inspired by theories of ‘Dark Ecology’ and ‘Ecology as slave’, artists found out urban plants are compressed and controlled by humans.
